Architectural innovations along the trail included drainages through gutters and culverts, and low walls delimited the road. In some places tunnels and retaining walls were built to allow safe navigation.
A postal system was carried out along the Inca Road, with relay runners called chasqui stationed at every 1.4 kilometers on the mail trail. It was said that the Inca emperor in Cusco could have fresh fish from the coastline in less than 2 days, a distance of 480 kilometers.
