Journal Articles for Archaeologists

Why are journal articles so hard to find? Whether you are sitting in your home, office, public, or academic library, you have access to complete articles in archaeology. Some you may have to buy, some you may have to be logged onto to even search. Some are even open access. This list of links leads you to each of the major online resources for academic research at the journal article level.

AnthroSource
Includes journal articles on anthropological and ethnographic information in publications like Cultural Anthropology, American Ethnologist and American Anthropologist, as well as the Archeological Papers of the AAA.

Chicago Journals
Chicago Journals lets you search within its catalog, which includes full article access (if you or your library subscribes) to the Journal of Near Eastern Studies and Current Anthropology.

Google Scholar
Google Scholar is a spotty, but useful and after all, free, resource to look up references.

Historic Archaeology
From the Society for Historical Archaeology, access to the contents of their journal, Historical Archaeology. You must have a subscription to the journal to get the articles themselves, but the Flash search works perfectly well for free.

JSTOR - The Scholarly Journal Archive
JSTOR is the academic depository of several of the most important archaeology journals. Unfortunately, and unreasonably, in my opinion, you need an academic subscription to so much as search the database.

ScienceDirect - Home
Science Direct includes all the journals published by Elsevier, including the Journal of Archaeological Science. Good search engine, recommended additional materials. Per article pay basis.

Springer US - Academic Journals, Books and Online Media
Springer publishes journals such as the African Archaeological Review, Journal of Archaeological Research and the Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory. Single articles for purchase; reasonable free search engine.

Wiley InterScience :: Home
Wiley publishes Geoarchaeology and the American Journal of Physical Anthropology; reasonable free search engine and per-pay article downloads.
