Jarigole Pillar (Kenya)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The Jarigole Pillar site is a Neolithic pastoralist site located at the foot of the Jarigole Hills in Kenya. The site includes a series of low mounds, pillars, platforms, and cairns. Like other pillar sites of the region such as the Kalakol Pillar Site, Jarigole Pillar is a cemetery where numerous secondary inhumations (probably bundle burials) were placed beginning approximately 4000 years ago and for several generations thereafter. The site assemblage for Jarigole Pillar includes a wide range of beads and personal ornamentation, Nderit ware pottery (including some pottery figurines), ostrich shell and flaked stone tools.

The site was found and is being excavated by members of the Koobi Fora Field School, jointly sponsored by Harvard University and the National Museums of Kenya.
