Definition: The ancient town of Jerash, located 48 kilometers north of the Jordanian capital of Amman, is one of the best preserved Roman towns in the world. First identified as Gerasa by the German explorer Ulrich Seetzen in 1806, Jerash was excavated beginning in the 1920s by several scholars including Arthur Segal at the University of Haifa. Recent investigations include aerial photography and GIS studies of the site.
