By , About.com Guide

Definition: Chinese paleontologist Jia Lanpo was one of the founders of scientific archaeology in China and was instrumental in the founding of the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Academia Sinica. He is most closely associated with the early man site of Zhoukoudian (the Peking Man site), where he first worked with Pei Wenzhong and then led his own excavations. By the 1960s and 1970s he led or participated in the discovery and excavation of numerous early man sites in Shanxi Province. Jia also worked actively to promote international work with foreign researchers, most importantly with J. Desmond Clark's survey of the Nihewan Valley.
