Alice Kober [1906-1950]

By , About.com Guide

Definition: Alice Kober, in the era before computers, used what must have been an awesome memory and note cards to describe and categorize the 186,000 occurrences of the Mycenaean language Linear B's 90 characters. Kober's painstaking work as assistant to John Myres made it possible for Michael Ventris to decipher that language after her untimely death. Her contribution to the study only became known recently when the Program in Aegean Scripts and Prehistory began a professional archive of her papers.
