Definition: The circular stone fortress of Kuélap is located on a rocky promontory deep in the Amazon rainforest of Peru, and dates to the Chachapoyas culture. The site was discovered in 1834 by Don Juan Crisóstomo Nieto, and subsequent investigators have included Antonio Raimondi, Charles Wiener and Adolph Bandelier. The site includes a walled settlement of approximately 450 hectares, built about AD 1300 and containing approximately 3000 residents. By 1532 the site was abandoned, a result of the Spanish occupation.
