Luna (Italy)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The ruins of the Etruscan, Roman and post-Roman trading port of Luna are located on the coast of northern Italy. Luna was occupied during the collapse of the Roman empire of the fifth and sixth centuries AD. As such, the site provides evidence of an abrupt drop off of Roman amenities, beginning with the cessation of quarrying activity at the nearby Carrara marble quarry. There is evidence at Luna for the devastating visits of Germanic troops through the area, and the breakdown of the local aqueducts and abandonment of the roads and communal buildings are evident as well.

Excavators at Luna include Bryan Ward-Perkins, who wrote a public archaology article on the site and its interpretations in the June 2005 issue of History Today.
