By , About.com Guide

Definition:

The Lyon's Bluff site (Smithsonian designation 22OK520) is a Mississippian period mound and village site located in northeastern Oktibbeha County, in the state of Mississippi, south central United States. Occupied roughly between ca. A.D. 1000-1650), the site has excellent preservation of bone and shell artifacts, resulting from the alkaline soils present at the site.

The site was first excavated in the 1930s by Moreau Chambers, and the most recent excavations have been conducted as field schools directed by Evan Peacock of the Mississippi State University's Department of Anthropology.
