Tenayuca is now immersed within the urban context of the town of San Bartolo Tenayuca, in a valley surrounded by the Cerro Tenayo and Cerro Chiquihuite mountains. Construction materials for the pyramid and its surrounding structures were likely quarried from these mountains. Most of Tenayuca's structures are located a few kilometers south of the Tlalnepantla river. Other archaeological sites nearby are Tenayuca II and Santa Cecilia Acatitlan.
