Although INAH archaeological investigations at Tenayuca were carried out in the 1960s and, more recently, over the last 10 years, in the areas surrounding the main complex the most thorough exploration of Tenayuca to date is the one carried out in the 1920s and 30s.
During these explorations, archaeologists identified six construction phases for the main pyramid. The construction style did not change during these phases: a nucleus of stone and earth was covered with small regularly shaped stones, then covered with a thick layer of plaster. The pyramid supported twin temples and was oriented toward the point in the horizon where the sun sets when it passes through the zenith.
