The main pyramid at Tenayuca has a quadrilateral plan with a double staircase oriented to the west. The stairway is divided into two halves by a double alfarda (balustrade) down the center; some of the steps are decorated with carved glyphs. Each of the six construction phases included two identical temples on top, an architectural innovation at Tenayuca. Prior to this time, the pattern in the valley of Mexico was a pyramid that included only one temple.
The Mexica eventually adopted the twin temple idea, apparently copied from the model established here. Although today there are no visible remains of the twin temples on top of the last construction phase, according to comparisons and external references, the twin temples were very similar to the great temples of Tenochtitlan and Tlatelolco, which were dedicated to the gods Huitzilopochtli and Tlaloc.
