A series of sculptures representing deities and images of snakes were found both within the pyramid and around the temple. The most impressive of these are the sculptures of two coiled crested fire-serpents (xiuhcoatl) located at both sides of the pyramid and probably related to the cult of the sun and to the completion of the 52-year cycles of the Aztec calendar. These sculptures were painted in different colors according to their position in regard to cardinal directions. The ones north of the central axis of the pyramid were painted in black, while those on the southern side were green-blue. These colors, for many Mesoamerican cultures, were cosmologically related to the passage of the sun in the sky.
It has been proposed that the different construction phases of the pyramid corresponded to cycles of 52 years, which for many Mesoamerican cultures represented important cosmological dates and were celebrated with the New Fire ceremony.
A bibliography has been collected for this project.
