Other buildings in the temple complex include a series of altars, some of which decorated with mural paintings. Within the Altar Tzompantli (Altar of the Skull Rack) also called the Altar de las Calaveras (Altar of the Skulls), was a small pit containing human bones, which was covered with a stucco painting consisting of bands of glyphs of skulls and crossed bones in vivid colors.

Recent archaeological excavations have recovered the remains of an elite residential complex few hundred meters west of the pyramid, in an area now covered by the local school.

The Tenayuca archaeological zone along with the local museum is under the care of the Mexican Instituto Nacional de Antropología e Historia (INAH) and is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday (10 am - 5 pm).
