Archaeological studies of fortresses are more typical of standard archaeological investigations: but because they were built for a specific purpose, they are of great interest to historians and archaeologists alike.

Fort Union Trading Post
A National Park Service site, in North Dakota, Fort Union was the principal trading post on the Upper Missouri River in the early 19th century.

Johnson's Island
