East of the North platform is the main ball court. At Monte Alban there are five separate ball courts, an aspect of the site that underlines the importance of the city at a regional level.
The main ball court, located on the east side of the main plaza, and was constructed during the Late Formative phase (ca 100 BC - AD 200). It has the typical I-shape, but with the peculiarity of being at a lower level than the plaza. It is closed on all sides by platforms and on its corners there are niches.
