Mas d'Azil, France

Definition: The paleolithic cave site known as Mas d'Azil is located in the Pyrénées of France, and was excavated by Edouard Piette in the 19th century. Mas d'Azil is the type site of the Azilian culture of the Late Paleolithic, and contains bone carvings interpreted by Piette as indicating the domestication of reindeer and horses. Occupations at the site range in date from 17,800 to 6500 years BC.
