By , About.com Guide

Definition: German ornithologist and paleontologist Ernst Mayr is probably best known for his seminal work begun in the 1940s, combining the work of Charles Darwin and Gregor Mendel to create the notion of Modern Evolutionary Synthesis. Long associated with the American Museum of Natural History, Mayr was Stephen Jay Gould's mentor at Harvard. Mayr continued his research right up to his death; his last book What Makes Biology Unique was published a month after his 100th birthday.
