Mean Ceramic Date

By , About.com Guide

Definition: A mean ceramic date is a method of determining the age of a historical artifact assemblage using the average dates of the pottery sherds collected from the site. Invented by Stanley South, MCD is completed by counting all the potsherds in a group, figuring out their date of manufacture, sorting them by date, and dividing them by how often they occur.
