Wayland's Smithy

Chris Morley
Definition: The word megalithic means 'large stone' and the word refers to any monumental human built or assembled structure, such as Stonehenge, or the standing stones of Stenness. Megalithic structures include temples, such as those found in Malta, circles such as Carnac, France, and tombs, such as Wayland's Smithy, UK.

Since megalithic sites are among the most permanent of archaeological structures, many of them had several functions as they were used by different cultural groups over the centuries and millennia. Megalithic tombs can also refer specifically to chambered tombs found in western Europe and constructed during the Neolithic Period, such as Dowth and Knowth.
Examples:
Carnac (France), Wayland's Smithy (UK), Dowth (UK)
