Monden-tsujibatake (Japan)

By , About.com Guide

Definition: The archaeological site of Monden-tsujibatake is a Yayoi period village and urnfield cemetery located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. Dated to the late Early through early Late Yayoi periods, the cemetery includes 27 jar burials, most of which date to the late Middle Yayoi (AD 1), and evidently placed in three episodes. Koji Mizoguchi has suggested that the pattern of placement of the jar burials is evidence of emerging social stratification, based on the maintenance of ancestral genealogy.
