These spectacular cliff dwellings were built in response to war, protecting the inhabitants by keeping them in hard-to-reach locations and they often included windowless walls and enclosed plazas with removable ladders for additional security. Located within the Navajo National Monument in Arizona, Betatakin was one of the many farming villages that dotted the Southwest in what is known as the "Four Corners" region of Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico.
