Nosy Mangabe (Madagascar)

Definition: The island of Nosy Mangabe, Madagascar, in Antongil Bay. has a settlement on it dated between 670 and 980 AD, including chlorite schist, locally made pottery and imported white glazed pottery, suggesting trade connections with the Near East (chlorite schist was widely used in the Islamic world, such as at the site of Quseir al-Qadim). The earliest settlement on Nosy Mangabe dates to about the 5th century AD, and starting about 1500 you can find the names of Dutch sailors carved into the rocks.
