Definition: The frustration of Danish historian Rasmus Nyerup was very important to the development of archaeology as a science. Director of the National Museum of Denmark, and first director of the Royal Committee for the Preservation and Collection of National Antiquities, Nyerup hired Christian Thomsen to help him order their large collection of artifacts: and thus was born the three-age system, Stone, Bronze, and Iron Ages.
