Opatów, Poland (Site 1)

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Opatów is the name of a village located in the Klobuck District of the Silesian Province in Southern Poland, and Site 1 is the designation of a enormous cemetery used during the Bronze Age through Hallstatt C/D periods (Lusatian cultures, 1200-700 BC) and during the Roman occupation of what is today Poland (Przeworsk culture, 150-400 AD).

The site was first investigated during the 1930s, and has most recently been salvage-excavated by Szczepanek, Wieczorek-Szmal and Jarosz as it has been systematically destroyed by salvage operations.

Over 1300 graves have been excavated to date, in a variety of different styles, including cinerary urns, crematory graves, and extended burials. The large amount of skeletal material form such a long period of time has allowed researchers to investigate long-term health issues and dietary components of elite and non-elites.
