Professional Associations

Professional archaeological associations assist the working archaeologist to keep in touch with colleagues, debate issues, and provide assistance with ethical and legal issues. They are also a great resource for finding jobs and appropriate schools for beginners.

American Cultural Resources Association
An organization for and about cultural resource managers in the United States.

Arizona Archaeological Council
The Arizona Archaeological Council is a nonprofit voluntary association existing to promote the goals of professional archaeology in Arizona. Dedicated to preserving cultural resources through education & advocacy, we embrace a diverse membership drawing from avocationalists, academics, federal, state & tribal agencies, private businesses & local communities.

European Association of Archaeologists

Institute for Field Archaeology
Archaeologist organization in the UK, founded in 1982 to advance the practice of archaeology and allied disciplines by promoting professional standards and ethics for the conservation, management and study of the archaeological resource. 

Pacific Coast Archaeological Society
Profession and amateur society dedicated to the study, protection, and preservation of the cultural resources of the southern Pacific coast region, including the Baja Peninsula, with a special focus on Orange County, California.

Plains Anthropological Society
An eclectic group of archaeologists, ethnohistorians, ethnologists, linguists, physical anthropologists, and geoscientists concerned with the Great Plains of the US; includes a journal and annual conference.

Society for American Archaeology
The professional organization of archaeologists in the New World, the SAA publishes American Antiquity.

Society for Archaeological Sciences
founded to establish a forum for scholars applying methods from the physical sciences to archaeology.

Society for Historical Archaeology
A professional organization of archaeologists primarily interested in the historic period (post-1492) in the New World. Historical Archaeology is published by the SHA.

World Archaeological Congress
WAC is an international organization which promotes interest in the past in all countries, including the development of regionally based histories and international academic interaction.
