Definition: French archaeologist Andre Parrot was the main discoverer and excavator of the Mari State, overseeing excavations at the site of Mari, Syria, for a remarkable 40 year period between 1933 to 1974. He was Curator-in-Chief of the French National Museums, and director of the Louvre, and published numerous texts on his work, including what are considered classics of Sumerian archaeology, such as Discovering Buried Worlds and Sumer: the Dawn of Art.
