Pengtoushan (China)

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: The Early Neolithic site of Pengtoushan is located in the Yangtze River valley of Lixian County, Hunan Province. The site has clear evidence of rice farming, and has been carbon dated to between about 9000-8000 years before the present. This date matches or possibly slightly predates the Peiligang culture, which was millet based.
