Denis Peyrony [1869-1954]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: French school teacher Denis Peyrony got his introduction to archaeology in 1894 when archaeologist L. Capitan conducted excavations at the early man sites in the Perigord valley near Les Eyzies. He discovered several sites in the Perigord region, such as Teyjat, Bernifal, and La Calévie, and is probably best remembered as a tireless promoter of the importance of paleolithic archaeology in France. Peyrony was chosen as Museum Curator in 1928 and Inspector of Historical Monuments in 1929 by the French government.
