Definition: Augustus Henry Lane Fox Pitt Rivers was an English archaeologist of the nineteenth century, who was tremendously influenced by Charles Darwin's Origin of the Species, such that he developed his own, parallel theory called Cultural Evolution. This theory was pretty much ignored by his colleagues in the late 19th century, but fifty years after his death, Cultural Evolution was recognized as a vital part of the underpinnings of archaeological theory.
