Definition: Pope Pius VI, born Giovanni Angelo Braschi, was very interested in Roman art, financing archaeological excavations of classical sites in Italy during his tenure as pope in the late-18th century. The fact that he is associated with archaeology is pretty weird, in the scheme of things, since he was elected pope with the help of anti-Jesuits, and is most remembered in the Catholic church as the pope who opposed the French revolution.
