Pungoteague Creek (Virginia, USA)

Definition: The Pungoteague Creek site is the name of a Colonial-period settlement on the eastern shore of the American state of Virginia. The city is best known as the residence of the 17th century African landowner Anthony Johnson, freed about 1640 and called the Patriarch of Pungoteague Creek. The area was excavated for several years of field schools run by Matthew Emerson at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. Results identified artifacts and features related to 17th through 19th century occupations; but I don't believe they discovered evidence of Anthony Johnson's farmstead.
