Remote Sensing Definitions

Remote sensing applications are numerous in archaeology; here are definitions of the remote sensing techniques used in the field today.

Geophysical Survey
Geophysical survey can refer to any systematic collection of geophysical data for spatial studies.

Ground Penetrating Radar
The ground penetrating radar technique of remote sensing uses radio waves.

Lidar (Light Detection and Ranging)
Lidar is a type of aircraft-based remote sensing, using laser-driven pulses of light and multispectral cameras to scan and process digital information about a landscape

Magnetometer Surveys
Magnetometer surveys work because the earth has a relatively static magnetic field and culture tends to interrupt that field.

Soil Resistivity
The geophysical prospection technique of investigating archaeological sites called soil resistivity was first used for archaeology by Richard Atkinson in the mid-1940s.
