Definition: Johan Georg Ramsauer was a manager of salt mines in western Austria during the mid-nineteenth century, who conducted systematic archaeological excavation off and on between 1843 and 1863 at the classic Iron Age site of Hallstatt. He excavated nearly 1,000 burials at Hallstatt, and used detailed drawings and careful excavation techniques, making him one of the pioneers of the scientific method.
