Definition: The archaeological site of Ras Mkumbuu was a 10th century trading port on the east coast of Africa with a substantial Muslim occupation. Mentioned by the 13th century Arab geographer Yakut bin Abdullah al Rumi, Ras Mkumbuu is located on the end of a long and narrow isthmus on the west coast of Pemba Island. Excavated by J.S. Kirkman in the 1950s.
