By , About.com Guide

Definition: Austrian art historian Alois Riegl was one of the founders of the Wiener Schule der Kunstgeschichte (the Viennese School of Art History). He was interested in the Roman art form, at some point in his career, and encouraged the appreciation of Roman art for its own merits, rather than as a degraded form of Greek art.
