Definition: In 1927, American archaeologist Frank H.H. Roberts was at the Bureau of American Ethnology at the Smithsonian Institution when he was asked by director Ales Hrdlicka to go visit an archaeological site near Folsom, New Mexico that was reported to have extinct bison bone and projectile points in situ. He took along A.V. Kidder; and when they came back, for the first time there was proof in American archaeology that there really had been people on the American continent at the same time as now-extinct mammals. Roberts was also director of the massive American River Basin Surveys conducted by the Smithsonian Institution after World War II.
