Definition: American adventurer and theologian Edward Robinson traveled to the Holy Land of Syria/Palestine in 1837 and 1838 with the Arabic-speaking missionary Eli Smith. His intent was to identify archaeological ruins associated with events in the Judeo-Christian bible; and in 1841 he published a massive three-volume book on his efforts called "Biblical Researches in Palestine, Mount Sinai and Arabia Petraea."
