Walter Edmund Roth [1861-1933]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: Pioneer British ethnologist and physician W. E. Roth spent most of his life as an anthropologist studying aborigines in Queensland, Australia. His books include grammars and dictionaries of the indigenous language Koko Yimidir. He amassed a considerable number of artifacts which are now at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Roth was also involved in colonial administration of the Australian aboriginal peoples, what seems like a peculiar oxymoron today.
