Robert Broom looking at Mrs. Ples (Statue, Sterkfontein)

Thomas Sly (c) 2006
This statue is at the entranceway to the long stairway into Sterkfontein. The man with the polished bronze nose is Robert Broom, an Scots-born paleontologist who discovered the Australopithecus africanus. He's contemplating the skull of Mrs. Ples, which is the name given to this first identified of our ancient hominid ancestors.
