One of the most important sites in the world is Sterkfontein, where many ancient hominid fossils were recovered, including the fossils known as "Mrs Ples", a 2.5-million-year-old australopithecine skull discovered by Robert Broom in 1947, and "Little Foot", a nearly complete australopithecus skeleton, about 4.17- million years old. This photograph is of the entranceway, which leads deep under the earth to six separate rooms.
