Karl Sapper [1866-1945]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: German antiquarian and explorer Karl Sapper was fascinated by the natural and cultural history of central America, and spent twelve years conducting research in Guatemala, Belize, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and other countries. For geographers, his interest in vulcanology is paramount; for archaeologists, his detailed descriptions and maps of Maya sites during the late 1890s is most useful.
