Definition: French consular agent Ernest de Sarzec is credited for discovering proof of the Sumerian civilization. Transferred to Basra in what is now Iraq in 1877, Sarzec began excavations at the site of Tello (ancient Girsu, also spelled Telloh), where he uncovered the foundations of temples and other buildings associated with the Sumerian king Gudea [ruled 2144-2124 BC]. Twentieth century investigations at Tello by Andre Parrot have attempted to piece together the information left by de Sarzec's less-than-ideal excavations and centuries of looting at the site.
