Archibald Henry Sayce [1845-1933]

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: A. H. Sayce was a British Orientalist of the old school. Based at Oxford University as an Assyriologist, Sayce was primarily interested in languages and philology, including cuneiform, Babylonian, Hittite, and old Hebrew. Sayce did conduct or at least oversee some excavations while at Oxford as well, at sites like Meroe and El Kab. There isn't a lot on the web these days about Sayce, but there is a fair biography on a site called Exsudo, linked below.

This glossary entry is part of the Dictionary of Archaeology. Sources for the term include the references listed on the front page of the Dictionary, and the websites listed in the sidebar. Any mistakes are the responsibility of Kris Hirst.
