Definition: Edward V. Sayre is a nuclear chemist who in the 1960s developed a technique for identifying the origins of the source materials of archaeological glass, by using neutron activation analysis. Sayre worked at the Brookhaven National Laboratory, and was subsequently Director of Research at Bostons Museum of Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian Institutions Conservation Analytical Laboratory. For over fifty years he has continued to contribute to the study of archaeometry in the areas of conservation and technical analysis of artifacts.
