Definition: J.J. Scaliger was a French scholar of many parts when you could get away with such a thing, in the late 16th and early 17th century. In 1600, Scaliger had become a central part of the then ten-year-old University of Leiden. He is most famous for the development of the Julien calendar, which he proposed in 1583; but his main contribution to archaeology is from a book he wrote in 1608, in which he defined the history and growth of classical Greek poetry. 150 years later, archaeologist J. J. Winckelmann used Scaliger's analysis as a guideline to understand Greek sculpture.
