Definition: German archaeologist Erich F. Schmidt was at the Oriental Institute in the early to mid 1930s when he excavated at Persepolis, Rayy, and Luristan. He was a pioneer of remote sensing techniques, who in 1935 conducted one of the earliest comprehensive planned aerial surveys of archaeological sites in Iran and the middle east.
