Gottleib Schumacher [1857-1925]

Definition: American archaeologist Gottleib Schumacher was long associated with the Palestine Exploration Fund. A surveyor and engineer by training, he first was introduced to archaeology during a survey of the Golan, Hauran, and the Ajlun districts in what is now Israel and Palestine for a proposed roadway. Schumacher published the archaeological findings in the PEF publications, and eventually conducted extensive excavations at the ancient city of Megiddo.
