Definition: After Alexander the Great died, his empire fractured into numerous satrapies, one of which was the Seleucid Empire, based in Babylon and headed by Seleucus, also known as Nicator. While the Seleucid empire was fairly successful, maintaining and continuing to absorb much of Alexander's empire (except for Egypt), eventually, the Seleucids succumbed to the Roman empire in the 1st century BC.
