Selk'nam People

By K. Kris Hirst, About.com

Definition: The Selk'nam were hunter-gatherers who lived in Tierra del Fuego at the very southern end of the South American continent. Like many indigenous people, their numbers suffered greatly after they were contacted by EuroAmericans, in this case beginning in the 16th century with Ferdinand Magellan. Film was taken of them in the late 19th century, and is used on occasion by archaeologists studying the hunter-gatherer lifestyle.
